History of the Municipality

According to the researches of documentary materials in the State Archive of Tirana, the functioning of the Albanian State, with regulations, laws and consolidate institutions dates back in 1920 when the official gazette started to be published. During 1912-1919 the state was not consolidated, and as consequence, had numerous problems of administrative functioning. Investigations in the state archive have revealed biographical data for senior and local officials. The law for the functioning of the Municipalities was re-enacted in November 1991. The term municipality was first used in our country from 1922 to 1945. During 1945-1992 municipalities did not exist. The Municipalities started to function again in 1992 after the changes in the political system.
